Finest Quality Wordmarks
I drew this lettering to promote my services on social media as a custom type logo designer. I wanted to design a piece that would explicitly announce I’m for hire and show off my skills at the same time.
A simple « Hire me! » message isn’t enough to grab attention, especially in the design world. Instead, drawing a custom lettering was an opportunity to send a message and show what I’m capable of artistically speaking. I wanted to draw something that reflected my style, show my universe, so I decided to use the photograph I shot for my homepage.
I see myself as an artisan as much as an artist. I work objectively. I follow core principles and techniques I’ve learnt to deliver products that fulfill goals. At the same time, I enjoy breaking the rules and exploring uncharted territories. This image reflects what I’m about because it depicts both sides: the hustler, and the dreamer.
As far as the lettering is concerned, my goal was to draw something simple, legible but visually striking. I decided to go with an artisanal look to match the overall feel and stick to my identity.
I therefore decided to draw inspiration from the old boutiques of the mid–20th century, with a slogan you could have found on a box of quality goods, but adapt it to wordmarks.
I tried many directions, but ultimately came back to monoline lettering. The simplicity of this style allows legibility and timelessness, plus it works beautifully over a photo. The keyword of the sentence is « quality », and the meaning of the word makes it obvious that it needs to be special. I chose to pair italic script with narrow sans-serif to create a visual balance, and stick with the old-school style of the 50’s.
I started by a meticulous and clean vectorization, which is my method of choice even when I then decide to roughen the whole piece. I created two versions: one with texture which works great with the grit of the image, and one without texture to use with solid backgrounds.
The quality and the simplicity of the lettering match my standards. The message is clear and legible, and the composition on the photo works perfectly. This image being a reminder of my homepage, there’s a feeling of consistency with my branding identity. The result is a strong image that works as a standalone piece of art and draws attention to my work, as well as a piece of branding that is strongly attached to my identity as a hand-letterer.
