Leftcoast

Leftcoast is the brand of adventure filmmaker Levi Allen Vanderkwaak.

I’m fond Levi’s work. I’ve been incredibly inspired by his debut film, Untethered, which he posted on Vimeo for free. This made me want to give back and create something for him, which is why I started this self-initiated custom font project.

Background

Levi produces a weekly vlog called Leftcoast Life. I’m a loyal viewer, and I realized that almost every bit of text in the videos uses Times New Roman (or similar). It doesn’t hurt the brand, but it doesn’t suit Levi’s filmmaking style at all. Leftcoast Life is all about nature, outdoor activities, a simple and authentic way of life. It regularly features the breath-taking wildlife of British Columbia, and I thought such a personal style deserved a custom font.

Research

The idea of making a capital handwriting font came naturally. Handwriting is spontaneous and natural, capital letters are frank and bold. It has an organic and one-of-a-kind flavor that feels perfectly in touch with the atmosphere of Levi’s films.

Sketching

When you watch the Leftcoast vlog, what prevails is an indie and hand-made look, which I wanted to render with the font. I used a Posca pen, so I could get thick lines with a consistent ink flow, and the texture of the brush. I used regular yet quality 80g paper to get a subtle texture.

Digital treatment

I vectorized the letters in a way that preserves the texture, with a lot of fine tuning to achieve the desired result. Every glyph is crisp and highly contrasted, with subtle irregularities all around. It doesn’t hurt the readability at small scale, but creates a nice gritty feel at bigger sizes.

Final concept

Leftcoast is a beautiful, spontaneous handwritten font with a gritty finish that reinforces the authentic and honest feel of Levi’s brand. It’s simple enough to avoid supplanting the visuals, and leave his work be the center of attention.รข??

The font contains almost 200 glyphs. It includes all latin letters, numbers, punctuation, money and math symbols, and a all the diacritics used in the English language. It’s versatile and suitable for titles as well as copy. It can be used in any medium, digital or print, and remains highly legible at any scale.
